She learned the loom before she learned to read, which is not a figure of speech in Vạn Phúc. The frame stood in the front room of her father's house, and the shuttle made a sound like rain on a tin roof, and she fell asleep to it for eighteen years before anyone thought to ask whether she wanted the work.
Her father chose her over her brothers when she was fifteen. He was one of the last men in the village who could still weave lụa vân, the cloud silk that carries two patterns at once: one that anyone can see across a room, and a second that only appears when the cloth is turned into the light. He taught her both, and he taught her badly on purpose, letting her ruin a warp a week until her hands understood what his words could not explain.
By her mid-twenties the village did not need to be convinced of anything. Bolts went out by the truckload to Eastern Europe, the looms in Vạn Phúc ran past midnight, and there was a year she could name the month her children got new shoes. Then the orders stopped. The reeling factories closed one after another, the mulberry acreage went to houses, and the silk that had once dressed a royal court was suddenly sold from a few stalls to a few streets. She was twenty-nine. She watched neighbours break their looms for firewood. She took a job in a shop selling imported cloth and lasted eleven months.
.
She went back because of a sentence her father said to her before he died, something blunt about how the whole village managed to keep weaving, so the two of them could manage it as well. She spent the next decade chasing raw silk into Lâm Đồng and Quảng Nam, and knocking on the doors of old women to ask for scraps of lụa vân so she could reverse-engineer patterns that no drawing had ever recorded. She was well into her forties before the second pattern came up out of the weave for her the way it used to.

When I met her she was sixty-three, the village was a tourist street, and she still sat down at the frame every morning before the buses arrived. Visitors came by the busload, photographed the loom for a minute, bought a scarf, and left. She was polite about it. But silk that is only performed for cameras is no longer a trade, it is an exhibit with a person still inside it.

I brought her Doa Bach in a small box: white silk pulled into a blossom and set on brass. She turned it over three times without saying anything. Then she asked whether it could survive the rain, and who had woven the silk, and whether the flower was meant to be worn close to the throat or the ear. When I answered, she nodded once and went to a shelf and brought down a folded length of cloth the colour of old honey.

She did not explain. She simply held it to the window and turned it, and the second pattern came up out of the weave like something surfacing. She said silk does not need to be preserved. It needs to be worn.

She was not asking for a museum. She was asking me to keep it moving, and she had twenty good years of weaving left to make sure I did.
